The so- called “Velhotes da Braguesa” are probably the most typical sweets and traditional of Vila Nova de Gaia, along with the “Broa de Avintes” (type of bread).

The “Velhotes da Braguesa” are a typical kind of sweet bread made with eggs and sugar, having a curious square shape. It is a typical sweet from Valadares, in Gaia’s municipality; many people look for it by the time of Sr. dos Aflitos festivity, in the month of July.

The reason of the name “da braguesa” comes from the fact that the wife of the manufacturer, being natural from Braga, came to Valadares, parish of Gaia, in the beginning of the century, where it settled a bakery, familiar traditional business.

We don’t know, therefore, when this bread started to be made and why the denomination “Velhotes”, becoming its fabric and preparation, as culinary secret.
