Sant’Ana Chapel

Matosinhos
Description
The existence of a chapel on this site is prior to the 17th century. It was rebuilt in 1768 on the remains of the former building, as commissioned by the Reverend José dos Santos, from the city of Mariana in Brazil. The construction work was led by the master bricklayer Domingos da Costa.
In1855 the religious building was used as a hospital to provide support to patients during a cholera epidemic. Inside there is a birthing chair that was used in that period.
