Penedo de Cuba/ Gruta das Coriscadas

Marco de Canaveses
Description

Located in an elevation of nature granite about 500m of EN 210 in Mount S. Tiago has traces of walls and Castro structures dwellings. The almost complete lack of vegetation makes visible the traces of intense fortified enclosure, with three rows of walls as well as the crests of some circular and foursquare buildings, certainly housing. Sure seems like it was heavily Romanized and was still busy in the High Middle Ages. Access to Castro the Arados is made by successively sidewalks that connect the lower part of the parish of Alpendorada and Matos (from EN 210, from the place of Serrinha) the quarries of the highest zone of the West precisely the hillside S. Tiago. Another sidewalk, more archaic perfection, connecting the center of the parish of Ariz (from the place of Carrais) through Arados, rising after the castro. Near this place there is a well maintained Plows stretch of sidewalk, which may possibly date back to Roman times. Has not been subject to systematic archaeological excavation, with a significant estate collected since the end of last century by Leite de Vasconcelos and others, lying deposited in the National Archaeology Museum of Lisbon.
