City Hall

Vila do Conde
Description

The new City Hall, located in the Nova Square, now Vasco da Gama Square, bearing at the front the date 1543, supposedly the date of completion. This fine example of sixteenth century architecture, complete with the placement of the new pillory in front of the building space (later withdrawn), one of the most significant urban interventions of the sixteenth century, constituting with the Mother Church, a new urban central of Vila do Conde.
Being an architecturally sober building, we highlight the front staircase to access the Main Hall, which is a beautiful executive gallery, with the portrait of D. Maria II in the centre, crowned by a carved baldachin with gold and red lambrequins. In the lower level, originally designed for servantry and the benefit of persons below the mansion to sell their goods, the composition of ogee arches through which one can access this space is highlighted.
