S. PEDRO DE RATES ROMANESQUE CHURCH

Póvoa de Varzim
Description
12/13th c.

This temple has its roots in a modest chapel from the Reconquest time which was rebuilt at the end of the 11th c., under D. Henrique and D. Teresa. The building grew in importance during the reign of King D. Afonso Henriques (the 1st king of Portugal), when construction of the present church began in the middle of the 12th c.; the works ended a century later.
It is a remarkable example of the Romanesque style in our country. Built of heavy granite, it has little openings, with a rose window, in the upper facade.
