The Museum was created to 1915 under the designation of Regional Museum of Works of Art, Archaeological and Numismatics of Bragança. In 1935, when the Abbot of Baçal retired, it was renamed the Abbot de Baçal Museum (Abade de Baçal), in honor of the scholar, researcher and also Director of the Museum from 1925 to 1935. He was a great promoter of the region's culture and defender of its patrimony,Played a decisive role in the projection of the institution and in the collection of a significant part of its collection through the excellent relations it had with the cultural and artistic circles of the time.
The main collections that make up the collection of the Museum are Archeology, Epigraphy, Sacred Art, Painting, Goldwork, Numismatics, Furniture and Ethnography.The Museum's estate has been gradually enriched through donations, legacies and acquisitions.
